A visa run on the exemption is riskier in 2026 than it used to be. The stay is 30 days, land borders allow no more than two visa-exempt entries a year, and air arrivals have no numeric cap, but officers can refuse repeat visitors. Overstay costs THB 500 a day, capped at THB 20,000, and a stay more than 90 days over adds a re-entry ban of a year or more. Rules are as of 7 October 2026.
In short
- The exemption gives 30 days for tourism only to 60 countries and territories, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the EU states (Tourism Authority of Thailand, TAT, 1 September 2026).
- At land-border checkpoints you may generally enter visa-exempt no more than twice a calendar year (TAT, 1 September 2026). The London embassy notice does not name the border type, and officers can refuse repeat visitors at airports.
- From January to May 2026 immigration refused entry 29,490 times and screens passport history (Thaiger, 14 July 2026).
- Overstay costs THB 500 a day, capped at THB 20,000, and it is a criminal offence: up to 2 years or a fine up to THB 20,000 (ThaiLawOnline, 5 October 2026).
- A re-entry ban runs from a year to 10 years, and it depends on how late you are and on whether you surrender or are arrested.
- A visa run does not get you a DTV: you file only in your country of nationality or permanent residence.
What is a visa run, and why is it riskier in 2026?
A visa run is a trip out of Thailand and back to restart a visa-exempt stay. It is riskier now because the stay shrank to 30 days, land borders cap you at two entries a year, and immigration runs a "No Entry, No Stay, No Escape" policy that screens passport history. Entry was refused 29,490 times from January to May 2026 (Thaiger, 14 July 2026).
A spokesperson said one or two trips a year are no problem, and the target is people who chain tourist entries to live or work in Thailand. Thaiger reported on 14 July 2026 that a land cap of two entries had already applied from late 2025, and the Interior Ministry notifications published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 now fix it (TAT, 1 September 2026). Thaiger (16 September 2026) separates a real visa obtained abroad from a "border bounce" made only to reuse the exemption, and calls the exemption a poor basis for repeated long stays.
How many times can you enter visa-free?
At land borders you may enter visa-exempt no more than twice per calendar year. Air arrivals have no numeric cap, but an officer can refuse repeat visitors if they suspect misuse. The limit does not apply to nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore, or to other nationalities the Minister designates (TAT, 1 September 2026; Thaiger, 6 September 2026; Vialto, 2026).
One small discrepancy matters. The London embassy announcement of 8 September 2026 says "only twice within a calendar year" and does not name the border type. The TAT note of 1 September 2026 ties the limit to land-border immigration checkpoints and adds "generally". Law firms and Thaiger, reading the gazette text, also say land checkpoints. Confirm the rule with immigration before you travel.
Which passports does this affect?
Sixty countries and territories get 30 days, and Mauritius and Seychelles get 15. Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia get only a visa on arrival (THB 2,000, 15 days, no extension). Twenty-one nationalities, among them Colombia, Mexico and Sri Lanka, need a visa before travel (TAT, 1 September 2026; VisasNews, September 2026).
For those 21 nationalities a "visa run" now means an e-Visa applied for in advance. Bilateral exemptions, such as Russia's 30 days, are separate. If your passport is not on the 30-day list, check the full position in Thailand visa options in 2026.
What will an officer check at the counter?
An officer may ask for a passport valid for six months with a blank page, an onward ticket and proof of THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family. The rule dates from a 2000 Ministry of Interior announcement, and TAT repeated it in July 2026 (Thaiger, 19 August 2026). Every entry also needs a TDAC, including a same-day return from a border run.
Arriving without a TDAC can mean denied boarding or being sent to an airport kiosk to fill it in (Thaiger; ThaiLawOnline, 6 October 2026). The TDAC guide explains the card.
What can you do instead of a visa run?
What replaces a run depends on your purpose: one more month as a tourist needs an extension, and longer stays need a visa tied to a purpose. A series of short entries is not a substitute, because in 2026 it risks a refusal at the border and uses up your limit.
| Need | Instead of a run | Note |
|---|---|---|
| One more month as a tourist | 30-day extension of the exemption | THB 1,900, officer decides, apply before your stay ends |
| More than a month as a tourist | Tourist visa (SETV or METV) | Up to 60 days per entry and a 30-day extension, apply for the e-Visa in advance, no work (Thaiger, 16 September 2026) |
| Remote work or soft power | DTV | File only where you are a national or permanent resident, police certificate, THB 500,000 |
| Age 50 or older | Retirement Non-O, O-A or O-X | THB 800,000 or THB 65,000 a month |
| Work in Thailand | Non-B and work permit | Through an employer |
How much does overstay cost?
THB 500 for each day, capped at THB 20,000, a ceiling you reach on day 40. At illustrative rates of THB 33 to the dollar and THB 43 to the pound (check the day's rate), the cap is about USD 600 or GBP 465. Overstay is also a criminal offence under Section 81 of the Immigration Act: up to 2 years in prison, a fine up to THB 20,000, or both. A short overstay is usually settled with the fine as you leave (ThaiLawOnline, 5 October 2026).
Read the "Admitted Until" date in your passport: it is the deadline that counts, not the validity of the visa (Thaiger, 16 September 2026). The 90-day report does not extend your stay.
How long is the re-entry ban for overstaying?
Surrender to immigration before leaving and there is no ban for an overstay of up to 90 days, while longer overstays carry 1, 3, 5 or 10 years. An arrest brings 5 years under a year of overstay and 10 years above it. The ban runs from the day you leave (Ministry of Interior Order 1/2558, in force since 20 March 2016).
| Overstay | You surrender before leaving | You are arrested |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 90 days | No ban, fine only | 5 years |
| Over 90 days | 1 year | 5 years (under a year of overstay) |
| Over 1 year | 3 years | 10 years |
| Over 3 years | 5 years | 10 years |
| Over 5 years | 10 years | 10 years |
Sources: Royal Thai Embassy Mumbai (page of 8 September 2019), TAT (February 2016), ThaiLawOnline (5 October 2026). They describe the scale the same way, and we found no change in 2026. By TAT's account, the rule does not cover visitors who left Thailand before the age of 18, or anyone who left before 20 March 2016.
The scale gives the arithmetic. Here are four examples with the daily fine you pay on leaving, which is capped at THB 20,000:
| Example | Fine on leaving | Ban if you surrender | Ban if arrested |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 days over | THB 5,000 | None | 5 years |
| 45 days over | THB 20,000, cap reached on day 40 | None | 5 years |
| 100 days over | THB 20,000 | 1 year | 5 years |
| 14 months over | THB 20,000 | 3 years | 10 years |
An arrest can also bring prosecution under Section 81, which the fine column does not include.
What should you do if you have already overstayed?
Do not wait to be caught. The ban scale shows that surrendering is cheaper: up to 90 days there is no ban, while an arrest brings a 5-year ban even after less than a year. Check your "Admitted Until" date, count the days, and go to an immigration office or a lawyer before you leave.
ThaiLawOnline (5 October 2026) says the minister can lift a ban in a special case, on proof of changed circumstances. We have not seen the official procedure. We help assess the situation and prepare documents, and the decision stays with the authority.
What we could not confirm
- How officers apply the word "generally" in the two-entry limit: TAT ties it to land-border checkpoints, while the London embassy notice does not name the border type.
- How the new deportation regulation affects the length of bans for overstay: there is no official explanation.
- Whether the ban scale changed in 2026: we saw the version in force since 20 March 2016.
- Whether officers at air borders apply any informal limit on repeat entries: the sources describe discretion, not a number.
Date checked: 7 October 2026. If a rule changes, we update this article and the date.
