The O-X is Thailand's long-stay retirement visa. It is described as a five-year route with a possible renewal for another five years, for a maximum of ten years in total — confirm the exact stay and renewal conditions with the Thai embassy handling your application before you plan around it. It is open only to nationals of a listed group of countries, and the financial bar is higher than for the O-A retirement visa. Reported eligible nationalities include the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and several European states. The English name is O-X (Long Stay visa); we found no official Thai name for it in the sources we could check.
Where the O-X comes up
You will see "O-X" in visa-category lists on Thai embassy websites and in articles about the ten-year retirement visa. Since 31 August 2025, Thailand's non-immigrant visa categories were consolidated from 17 to 7, and O-X now sits inside the general "O" category together with Non-O and O-A. How that shows up in practice at the application stage has not been officially clarified, and several embassies still use the "O-X" label in their own materials. Applications filed from abroad have gone through the e-Visa portal since 1 January 2025.
For how O-X, O-A and Non-O 50+ fit together, see the retirement visa: Non-O, O-A and O-X. If you are still weighing visa categories more broadly, the guide to Thailand visa options lays out the alternatives.
How O-X differs from O-A and Non-O
The Non-O retirement route generally involves applying inside Thailand for an annual extension of stay from age 50; confirm the applicable conditions with the Immigration Bureau. O-A is generally described as a one-year route applied for abroad, with its own health-insurance condition that your embassy will specify; confirm the application and stay conditions with the Thai embassy handling your application. O-X is described as a five-year route with a possible further five years, open only to the listed nationalities, and its money test is higher than the O-A's; it also calls for insurance, which some Thai law firms report must be issued by a Thai insurer. Before committing to a policy or deposit, confirm the financial and insurance requirements and the exact stay and renewal conditions with the Thai embassy handling your application.
What to check: nationality and funds
Start with nationality. If you hold a UK, US, Canadian, Australian or Japanese passport, you are among the groups reported as eligible, but the full official list of the roughly 14 covered countries is not available in what we could verify. Before you prepare any documents, we recommend confirming your nationality against the Thai embassy's own list for your country: that decides which visa you are actually applying for.
Next come the funds. O-X asks for more than O-A, both at the point of application and afterward. Before placing the deposit, ask the Thai embassy to confirm the initial amount, the minimum balance you must retain and when withdrawals are allowed. A retirement-based status, whichever one applies to you, does not permit work; if you plan to work in Thailand, a work permit tied to an employer is a separate requirement, checked through the Department of Employment.
