O-A is a Thai non-immigrant visa for retirees. You apply for it at a Thai embassy or consulate abroad before you travel, and it lets you live in Thailand for a year. To qualify, you show enough income or savings and take out health insurance that covers your whole stay. The full name is Non-Immigrant Visa O-A (Long Stay). No official guidance on the application-form label is available, so check the wording with the embassy handling your application; many embassies still call it the O-A.
Where the O-A comes up
You'll come across "O-A" on Thai embassy websites and in guides to Thailand's retirement visas. On 31 August 2025, Thailand folded its 17 non-immigrant visa categories into 7, and O-A became part of the single O category; the conditions themselves didn't change. Many embassies and guides still use the old O-A label all the same. No official explanation has been published yet on how O-A now appears on the e-Visa application form, so check the exact wording with the embassy where you're applying before you start. The Thai retirement visa in 2026 covers every condition in detail, and e-Visa has been the only way to apply since 1 January 2025.
How O-A differs from Non-O and O-X
Three retirement-related routes get mixed up often, so here's the short version:
| Visa | Where you apply | Length | Insurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-O (retirement extension) | inside Thailand, at an immigration office | one year, renewed annually | generally not required; confirm with the immigration office handling your application |
| O-A | abroad, before you travel | one year | compulsory |
| O-X | check the available route with the Thai embassy or Immigration Bureau | 5 years, renewable once for another 5 | compulsory |
The Non-O retirement extension is filed once you're already living in Thailand; O-A is a separate visa you get before you fly in, and it runs for a year. O-X is built for a longer stay and is open only to nationals of a short list of countries, among them the UK, the US, Canada and Australia; its financial threshold is higher than for Non-O or O-A. For the full comparison, see the Thai retirement visa in 2026.
What to check: insurance and funds
Health insurance for the O-A must stay active for your whole stay and through every renewal. Coverage requirements differ from one embassy to another, so check the page of the embassy where you're filing before you apply. Our lawyers check the embassy's current insurance and funds requirements before filing.
Check the embassy's O-A checklist before preparing your financial evidence: confirm whether it accepts savings, pension or other income, or a combination, and which bank statements it requires.
If you're unsure whether an O-A from your home country or a Non-O extension from inside Thailand suits you better, write to us — we reply within 24 hours and explain what to do and what it will cost. More on how we help is on our retirement visa page.
